Focus on Ayurveda: Ashwaganda

Ashwaganda, a staple Ayurvedic herbal medicine has been used for thousands of years providing many benefits for the mind and body. Ayurveda is the traditional medicine system of India which originates back many thousands of years, and focuses on healing the body through diet and lifestyle. Yoga is the sister science of Ayurveda in Vedic tradition, which focuses on awareness to balance the mind, body and soul and together they form a pure holistic approach to overall wellness and longevity.

Ashwaganda is an adaptogen and is sourced from a small tree of the same name. Its roots are primarily used though leaves and berries are also utilised.  Ashwaganda can lower the release of cortisol in the body (commonly referred to as the stress hormone), having a positive effect on the brain, immunity and nervous systems and can support the mind and body to relax, thereby stabilising the brain and body response to stress and anxiety.

The positive and calming effects of Ashwaganda is highly regarded as a popular choice to manage stress and anxiety in the mind and body. Sleep quality can also be improved through the relaxation response and is equally sought after due to the popularity of the herbal therapeutic effects.

Ashwaganda also provides anti-inflammatory properties whilst supporting brain function, and overall immunity benefiting the body as well as the mind.

Ashwaganda in Sanskrit translates to ‘smell of a horse’ though has also been referred to by other names such as winter cherry and Indian ginseng. However the true botanical name is Withania Somnifera.

In Western societies, Ashwaganda can be found most commonly as a powder or capsules, however its organic quality and source is important to be considered before purchasing to ensure the product is pure and of high standard.

Equally, although Ashwaganda is a well known herbal remedy, it can negatively interact with existing medication so it’s important to consult your health care practitioner before use.
