The core foundation of Ayurvedic medicine and lifestyle wellness is healing the body from the inside out.
We are born with a dominant dosha (also known as constitution) which can often become unbalanced over time, causing unrest and illness to manifest within the body.
Visiting a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor or practitioner for a consultation and following an Ayurvedic lifestyle wellness plan will bring balance and harmony back to the body, mind and soul.
An Ayurvedic consultation
Consultations may typically range from 60-90 minutes, however can be longer depending on your current concerns. Quality time with the practitioner or Ayurvedic Doctor will provide the opportunity to obtain a deep holistic view and insight into your current diet and lifestyle, sleep patterns, medication, stress levels, injury and illness overall.
Often you will be asked to complete a questionnaire before the consultation which will include your medical history, to provide initial insights and knowledge, for contributing factors and potential root causes of disease and imbalances within the body for the practitioner.
Alongside seeking clarity and understanding, a consultation will generally include 3 key areas to be explored with you to identify your unique Dosha (Prakruti), which is your dominant dosha and identify an overall picture of health.
These often include:
Asking questions – a questionnaire is often provided before the appointment to be discussed at the consultation regarding your medical history, current health, lifestyle, sleep patterns, diet, levels of stress and wellbeing.
Pulse reading (Nadi Pariksha), a fundamental diagnostic technique within Ayurvedic medicine, to assess the rhythm and quality of the pulse, to identify a prominent dosha, (each dosha has their own type of pulse).
Visual observation (Darshanam Pariksha) to observe the face, tongue, lips, eyes, nails and skin.
Physiological (Prakriti) Structure of the body, features, mental and emotion wellbeing.
Breathing assessment (Pranavacha Scrotas) observation of the breath (prana).
Assessments are in-depth to identify your unique Dosha. From here a customised treatment plan will be discussed and advised, including suggested herbs to support the body and harmonise any imbalances, diet and foods to eat for your unique Dosha and what to avoid, plus lifestyle suggestions such as the inclusion of yoga and meditation.
If you are looking for an alternative to a Western approach to wellness or simply curious, research a qualified Ayurvedic Doctor or practitioner to discover a different perspective for your lifestyle wellness.
